چکیده

Following Kohlberg-Mertens [8, 1986], we investigate an axiomatic approach to non-cooperative solution concepts. A basic question in this program is identifying a backward-induction axiom (for general games). We show that three axioms—Existence, Rationality, and Difference—together characterize backward induction in perfect-information games satisfying a “single payoff condition.” We discuss implications for the axiomatic program.

Axiomatic Theory of Equilibrium Selection in Signaling Games with Generic Payoffs

Three axioms from decision theory select sets of Nash equilibria of signaling games in extensive form with generic payoffs. The axioms require undominated strategies (admissibility), inclusion of a sequential equilibrium (backward induction), and dependence only on the game’s normal form even when embedded in a larger game with redundant strategies or irrelevant players (small worlds). The axio...

Axiomatic Justification of Stable Equilibria

A solution concept that satisfies the axioms of invariance and strong backward induction selects a stable set of a game’s equilibria.

Uniqueness of the index for Nash equilibria of two-player games

A basic problem of game theory is equilibrium selection; that is, identifying those equilibria that satisfy plausible axioms of the sort postulated by Kohlberg and Mertens (1986) and Mertens (1989), and variants proposed by Banks and Sobel (1987), Cho and Kreps (1987), and others. The main axioms require properties such as Invariance (with respect to addition or deletion of redundant pure strat...

Dynamic Choice under Ambiguity

This paper analyzes sophisticated dynamic choice for ambiguity-sensitive decision makers. It characterizes Backward Induction and a single-person version of Subgame Perfection via axioms on preferences over decision trees. Furthermore, it indicates how to elicit conditional preferences from prior preferences. The key axiom is a weakening of Dynamic Consistency, deemed Sophistication. The analys...

Axiomatic Theory of Equilibrium Selection for Games with Two Players, Perfect Information, and Generic Payoffs

Three axioms from decision theory are applied to refinements that select connected subsets of the Nash equilibria of games with perfect recall. The first axiom requires all equilibria in a selected subset to be admissible, i.e. each player’s strategy is an admissible optimal reply to other players’ strategies. The second axiom invokes backward induction by requiring a selected subset to contain...
